Having had travel problems causing a run at Chepstwo to be shelved, it was good that Far Too Beautiful travelled over to Kempton OK, Aaron travelled in the back of the box with her and said that she had a couple of times where she was getting a little irritated, but that she calmed down quickly. She was quite excitable when she was unloaded but there was a lot going on at the time and she was very relaxed in the racecourse stables.
We had 25 shareholders at Kempton and thankfully the weather was good. With Covid restrictions limiting us to only two in the paddock, it was impossible to get pre-race information from Michael and Joey Haynes (our jockey) to everyone. The plan however was to settle FTB in 4th or 5th and then see what she could do in the home straight.
After opening around 25-1, FTB had drifted to 100-1 before another horse was withdrawn after breaking out of the stalls. You rarely see a market move like that especially for a horse that won last time out and as accurate as that assessment proved to be, it was very hard to explain prior to the race did leave us wondering what prompted it.
When we did get underway, FTB was away so well that Joey had to rein back to let others cross ahead of her and she settled in. After an initial rush, the pace was quite steady, but despite this, Joey felt that FTB was a little bit on and off the bridle during the race inferring that from time to time she was not going with the pace.
This was only her second run and she is still inexperienced and she showed it a little. She may also have been shying away from the “kickback” from the horses in front.
Joey definitely had to push her a couple of times leaving the back straight and she was being chased along 3f out as they turned for home and others quickened. She was still where she needed to be at the 2f pole but was going back rather than forward and dropped through the field to be 10th.
Joey’s initial words were “she is a nice filly and she will definitely win more races”. He felt that she really needed to be stepped up in trip to 1m 6f or 2 miles. He confirmed that she had stayed on well to the line and that there would be better days ahead for her.
