BG Racing – Update 14-01-24
We had a better run from Stryder last week and we are looking forward to Bella Cavalla making her debut this week as long as the forecast cold weather does not scupper that plan.
As ever, please get in touch if you have any questions.
All is fine with Bella Cavalla and she was entered to race in a national hunt flat race at Wincanton on Friday 12th January, but we decided to run her there.
It was quite a hot race with several horses who had prior experience in either national hunt races or point-to-point races and things might have all been a bit more robust and happening quickly in this race than will in some other contests.
We identified an alternative race at Wincanton (the same track) this coming Thursday (18th January) which is for unraced horses only and therefore all the opposition will be at a similar level of experience.
This week therefore is now fingers crossed that we do not get snow or freezing conditions that force the abandonment of the meeting. Frost appears to be the most likely issue as the threat of snow in the Wincanton area is reducing.
The race attracted 20 entries, but Bella Cavalla secured a guaranteed place in the field in the ballot, if we declare to run and the meeting goes ahead.
It is not too late to get involved in ownership of her and come racing this week. Shares of her are still available with 2% for £750. Please get in touch if you are interested.
We managed to get Stryder to the races at Wolverhampton last Sunday where he finished 8th. This was a much more pleasing run than the bare result as he traveled really well through the race and just failed to run on in the last half furlong which cost him a few places. Jockey Rab Havlin maintained that the way he travels is a good indication that he is better than he has shown to date.
As they swung for home and passed the two furlong pole, you would have been hard-pressed to identify anything going better than Stryder who looked ready to mount a challenge to the leader from 2nd. As they straightened, Beauzon (the eventual winner) joined and passed Stryder on his outside, but in a line of five just outside the final furlong, Stryder looked to have every chance of being 2nd or 3rd. He was a narrow 4th at the furlong pole but still right in contention for a place. He held fourth until the last half furlong and then just failed to see off challenges from behind losing four places in the last 100 yards.
We have looked at next race options, and have decided to give 5 furlongs a try as Rab indicated that Stryder had the pace for 5f and the obvious choice is another valuable race at Chelmsford next Sunday. We will make an entry for this one tomorrow, but he may not get in there though, so we may need to wait for a race at Lingfield the following Thursday.
You can still get involved in ownership of Stryder with shareholding costs of £830 for 2%, £1925 for 5% and £3550 for 10%. These cover purchase and training fees to 31st August 2024. Installment payments are fine, so people can pay monthly if this suits them better.

Just one winner to report on and that was for Neil Mulholland. Transmission won at Plumpton last Sunday, but the real story was the miracle recovery from jockey, Joe Anderson, who got back into the saddle from having around the horse’s neck after a mistake!
If you are interested in finding out more about racehorse ownership, then please get in touch as I would be delighted to discuss things with you.
Bella Cavalla is £750 for a 2% shareholding including all costs to 30th June 2024 and Stryder is £830 for 2% covering the period to 31st August 2024. Standing order payments can be made to spread the cost and shareholders get regular email updates along with the chance to come to the stables with me as well as to the races. There are also shareholder social events during the year.
