With Phil on holiday in North Wales, there was a team of three shareholders at Lingfield and one of those was Bryan who is actually a shareholder of Fr Humphrey! Lawrence and Rainer were representing the The Way You Dance shareholder group.
Ahead of the race things went fine, and whilst The Way You Dance got a little warm in the preliminaries, he remained fairly calm. Michael had decided to go with a change of jockey for this race and had booked Rhys Clutterbuck who rides out at the yard and who claims a valuable 7lbs.
Rhys was asked to be positive on The Way You Dance early in the race, to try to get him well forward as his last race had indicated that TWYD is not always willing to move up mid-race “on-demand”. We hoped that by starting well forward, he would stay to the fore.
Out of the stalls, Rhys was able to get The Way You Dance up to the front on the outside but TWYD did not want to lead and so Rhys settled him on the outside. He was in 4th for the first half circuit with plenty of room on the outside, but was slightly inconvenienced with a circuit to go when one of his rivals swept around the outside of him and then put the brakes on forcing him to drop back to the second wave, but he still seemed to be on the bridle and comfortable with his position.
That all changed at the top of the hill, when it became clear that The Way You Dance was going to struggle. As the field quickened, TWTD was unable to hold a position and quickly faded back out of contention. Once his chance was totally gone, Rhys eased him up and let him come home in his own time.
This run was not unexpected, but was still disappointing. I spoke to Michael at length afterwards and he was keen to “have one more roll of the dice” at Bath in a couple of weeks.
