There were nine shareholders at Bath, with Phil & Cathy joined by Lawrence, Rainer, Gerald, Gerry, Ben, Nic and Chris. Bath has an excellent owners and trainers facility and there was plenty of room in a secondary room for us to base as a group. We enjoyed a nice lunch and later in the day, scones with jam and cream.
There were several races to enjoy before ours so we shuttled back and forth between the O&T building, a viewing box that Bath had provided and the front of the stands.
In our race, all the excitement was around the favourite, Quel Destin a top-class hurdler whose flat handicap mark suggested he could pocket some easy prize money ahead of his hurdles campaign. Paul Nicholls his trainer was at Bath with Tom Malone, the bloodstock agent and a group of the owners and they were the centre of attention for the Sky Sports Racing cameras!
The Way You Dance was brought to the races by Stephen, Michael’s travelling head lad and he reported that The Way You Dance had travelled down well and was very calm in the stables. He did keep pretty calm in the paddock as well, there was a little tail swishing but he did not sweat up and seemed pretty settled.
Seamus Cronin was our jockey and he joined us in the paddock. It had been agreed that the priority was to get TWYD some room, so he was to ride him positively and if TWYD could get to the front that was fine / preferable but certainly to keep him prominent and with some space.
From the stalls, TWYD went forward positively and at the first turn, he was upsides Quel Destin in a share of the lead. They were joined on the outside by Arthur Pendragon and TWYD got a bit squeezed, but he seemed to handle it OK and stayed settled alongside Quel Destin. Neil Mulholland’s horse Bambys Boy them swept by relegating TWYD to a share of 3rd, but he seemed happy there and had the space we wanted. They may have been going a bit quick in front as Seamus was pushing him along turning into the back straight, but he responded and held his position and seemed more settled again. Not much changed down the back straight, but turning out of it Seamus had to give him another push as he dropped to 4th. He was however suddenly looking to be going well again and swept round the outside into 3rd halfway around the bend.
At the top of the straight, he was perfectly placed and it was a case of whether he would go forward from there. Within a few strides, it became clear that the answer was no and after chasing him along for a furlong, Seamus relaxed and let him come home in his own time.
Seamus did not have much time afterwards as he was off to ride at Kempton, but he reported that he felt that TWYD was not willing to really let himself race when he needed to. He said that TWYD’s head was coming back into him when he would have been wanting him to put it down and go forward.
Having tried everything with him this season, regrettably we decided that enough is enough and we took the decision that this will be TWYD’s last race. We will take control of his retirement to ensure he gets a good home, as he has provided us with a lot of fun and deserves some payback for that.
