BG Racing – Update 29-08-23

Two weeks since my last update, but I have issued at least one email in respect of each horse during that period, so at least all my shareholders have heard from me even if I did not get a newsletter done!
Last week was busy as my wife’s family were over from the US for a week so there were things going on every evening and it became a battle to keep up with the task list! This week does not look much better, but hopefully, I can stay on track.
At one point last week it looked like I might have to add a drive to Cartmel and back on Monday into my already full diary. Thankfully for me, Neil decided that the ground would be too soft for Kate and did not declare her. It was quite a speculative entry as Neil took advantage of there not being many entries just before the race closed, but in the end, the race was not suitable.
This means that we will stick to the previously advertised plan and run at Worcester next Sunday. She has been entered in this race and declarations are on Friday.
We saw Dynamic Kate when we were down for Bella Cavalla’s naming day and she looks really well so hopefully she can follow up her recent win with another big run.
Sajwaan ran another poor race at Wolverhampton and as I explained to his shareholders after that run, I fear that we may be reaching the end of the line with him.
Our trainer, Michael Attwater and I have started to look for a replacement but while we are doing so, there were a couple more things that we felt were worth a try. We will do this at the races where we can have a day out and hence he runs again tomorrow at Lingfield at 5.30 pm.
The first thing will be to try some different tactics. He has only been held up once and that was at a time when he was showing plenty of early speed. He has stopped doing that now and Michael felt that it might be worth another try to hold him up early to see if this encouraged him to go and overtake one or two later on in the race. If that were to work it would produce an avenue for the future, but aside from that, the only thing that we might try is to fit him with some blinkers to see if that improves his attitude and focus in the race.
It does seem that he has just decided that he does not want to try too hard in his races and if that is the case then we will have no alternative other than to find him a home outside racing, but let’s hope he delivers a pleasantly surprising run tomorrow.
This section has previously been marked as the Milan Mare, but several of us were down at Neil’s on Friday 18th August to see our mare and to announce the results of the naming competition.
You will have guessed from the title that our mare has been named Bella Cavalla which means “beautiful mare” in Italian.
Our mare is looking in good order. She is only trotting and cantering at the moment, so she has a way to go to build fitness before she can run, but here’s hoping that she gives us some fun over the winter.

Our guest this month is Stefano Cherchi, a Newmarket-based jockey. He rides for Amy Murphy and Marco Botti amongst others and I really enjoyed our chat. We will have a new episode of ITR this Friday and this one features Jimmy George from Tattersalls bloodstock auctioneers. Jimmy is their marketing director and he was another excellent guest.
The 24th was quite a day for our trainer Neil Mulholland.
He told me in the morning that he thought that Tallys Son could outrun his odds and that assertion proved absolutely correct as Tallys Son battled bravely to hang on to a small lead and record a victory at 33-1.
Neil ended up with a big win double when Watergrange Jack followed up his recent Worcester win with another at Fontwell later the same day.

As mentioned above, Bella Cavalla is £390 for a 1% share including all costs to 30th June 2024 and 2% is just £750. Standing order payments can be made to spread the cost and shareholders get regular email updates along with the chance to come to the stables with me as well as to the races. There are also shareholder social events during the year.
