After what seemed a very long winter break, with hold ups in preparation arising from snowfall, it was great to get The Way You Dance back on the racecourse. It was a warm sunny evening meeting at Chepstow where he reappeared in a 2 mile handicap on the flat. We say flat, but Chepstow is a very undulating course, so it was more of a 2 mile handicap on the up, down, up and down again!
A car of four headed down from Surrey with Lawrence on driving duties, joined by Phil, Cathy and Peter. Gerald and Gerry made their way to Chepstow together and the eight strong contingent was rounded out by Chris and Sophie who were making their BG Racing on-course debut! On arrival we met in the very nice owners facility and split our time between there and the steps to watch the earlier races. Phil did head down for a chat with Neil after his Happy Escape won an earlier race and ended up receiving the winners presentation on behalf of the absent owners!
After riding Happy Escape, jockey Timmy Murphy announced his retirement and a presentation was hurriedly organised for him. Timmy has had a great career over jumps and on the flat including winning the Grand National on Comply or Die. Obviously, his career highlight however was riding BG Racing’s first winner on Oscara Dara in a NH Flat race on the all weather track at Southwell!
Bailerico one of TWYD’s opponents was being very well backed and the connections were standing nearby, so we got talking. They were hopeful that their horse would run well and might be well handicapped, but were not totally sure. It transpired later that he was!
As the evening drew on, we headed down to the saddling boxes to see TWYD saddled. He was quite warm and on his toes in the saddling area but seemed to calm down a bit when he ready to make his way into the paddock. We were fortunate to have the services of Sylvestre De Sousa as our jockey for the race and we met him in the paddock. Riding instructions were issued and it was off to the course. Sylvestre settled TWYD towards the rear, but he travelled well and moved up turning for home. As they set off down the home run he looked like coming past those in front, but Bailerico was also running on strongly and the race developed into a head to head. Bailerico proved slightly stronger and Sylvestre eased back once he realised he would not win. The two finished 9 lengths clear of the third though, so this was a good run.
After the race Sylvestre reported that TWYD would proabably improve a little for the run, and that he had run a good race. After a debrief amongst the owners and a stop to record a Facebook live for those who could not attend, it was back to the cars for the drive home with plenty of anticipation for the summer season!
