A disappointing last run before a break for The Way You Dance as we approached the end of our year of ownership.
A group of 9 were at Huntingdon, with a first time at the races for Frank and for Alan’s wife Clarissa. Paul came down from Harrogate, Lawrence came up from Kent and Peter came up with Phil, Sarah and Cathy.
Neil had expressed concern that TWYD had worked poorly the previous Thursday, but that he was much happier with him on Saturday. There was the possibility that he needed a break but Neil seemed quite bullish as TWYD was being saddled. The Way You Dance got a bit warm for a while, but he calmed down once saddled was happy enough when the jockeys arrived.
Sean was instructed to ride TWYD just off the pace and to challenge late and he got TWYD settled well early but it was not long before there were some warning signs as TWYD seemed to be struggling a bit to hold his position and dropped towards the rear at the end of the back straight. He did move up to 4th as they turned for home and he looked like he could stay on for 2nd, but despite battling on well, 4th was as good as it got.
Sean reported that everything had been a shade quick for TWYD, but rather than blame the pace or distance, the reality was probably that the reason for this was that it was a race too far for our lad. The winner was Sarpech who we beat last time. Their connections thought this was because “the race was not a sprint this time” but Neil and I felt that TWYD on his game would probably have beaten him again.
The important thing was that TWYD was fine. The morning after the race he was a shade stiff as he has been recently, but with no immediate running plan, he will now be given a break.
