Post Race Video Report from the Course

Only four owners at Kempton due to a clash with the World Cup Semi Final that England were contesting.  It was therefore also quite a sparse crowd at Kempton, but at least there was plenty of room to move around and no wait to get our complimentary meal in the owners and trainers bar.

Our race was at 7.55pm and The Way You Dance was carrying 9 stone 1lb which is only 1lb above the minimum weight that our jockey Adam Kirby can ride at.  We had our fingers crossed that Adam had not been in the sauna too long and made himself too weak, but we need not have worried!

Neil Mulholland was not at Kempton, so Liz Harrington saddled The Way You Dance and we were soon headed to the paddock to talk to Adam.  Pre-race Adam was concerned about the draw.  Drawn on the outside at 11, Adam was not sure how easy it would be to get into the position he wanted just behind the leaders without getting stuck too wide.  Given that he rides Kempton as well as anyone, we confirmed that he should ride the race as he found it and if he needed to change the plan, he should do so.

Fortunately as Adam reported later, he had no issues getting his position as TWYD was quickly away.  Adam said that a horse with early pace is a great asset in that situation as he was able to pick his spot and get into it without any real difficulty.  As the field turned into the home straight the first time, it looked like the pace had slowed and we were concerned that this would not suit us, but thankfully others felt the same and another horse rushed up the outside to push the pace on which was a relief.

The Way You Dance travelled beautifully during the race and was going strongly on the turn for home.  Adam pulled him out to make his challenge and TWYD went to the front.  The leader was drifting wide and TWYD with him, but The Way You Dance was getting ahead.  As they hit the final furlong TWYD started to edge right and his main rival was forced to go with him, but they never bumped and the other jockey never stopped riding.  Towards the line TWYD was stopping a bit and other horse rallied on the line, but the photo showed The Way You Dance a head up at the finish.

I went to meet Adam who said that he felt he had gone to the front plenty early enough and that TWYD was tiring a little at the line, but that everything had gone well and he felt that there was no reason to change anything in terms of distance or tactics for future races.  At this point a stewards enquiry was called.  Adam quickly confirmed that he felt that the other horse had carried him left before he had then drifted back to the right and he felt that there was nothing at all that should put the result at risk.  He headed in quickly to deal with the enquiry.

We watched a couple of replays and could see nothing that should affect the result, but still there was no announcement.  After an age (the jockeys were already in the paddock for the next race), it was finally announced that the places remained unaltered and we were eventually able to receive our presentation and head to the winners room to watch another replay of the race.

Four times in the first three from four runs this season and The Way You Dance continues to be a really fun horse to own.
