Ewart Lister accompanied Phil Boyle up to a Monday afternoon meeting at Southwell that ended up being a very disappointing one.  With plenty of pace in the race and another horse that had a tendency to jump sideways, it had been agreed that Fr Humphrey should be jumped off on the inside to the fore.

Neil Mulholland was not at the course but had passed these instructions on to jockey Harry Reed and told him that we would be happy for Fr Humphrey to lead, but not take on others if they were determined to go forward.

Harry got Fr Humphrey well-positioned at the start on the inside and he jumped away well, but as he approached the first, Fr Humphrey jinked left through the rail and that was the end of the race for him.

Southwell is quirky in that they come into the first at an angle and Humphrey would have had plenty of time to see the clear ground to the left of the fence and it is probable that he had got his head around the fact that this was where he was going and then panicked when he suddenly realised he was on course to jump the fence.

The upshot of his misdemeanour was that we got no run, but more importantly and seriously, Harry Reed ended up with a broken arm which was terrible news.

Humphrey seemed fine and did not go far after the incident so he has had no sort of run and we were hopeful that we could get him back racing soon.
