A debut run for Justice Super came in the last race of the day at Taunton. Having seen 30 entries at the 5 day stage, the fast ground resulted in only five declared for what was a valuable national hunt flat race. Justice Super opened up as the 25-1 outsider of the field and based upon his work at home, this looked generous.
With Phil unable to make the race, Peter Leonard co-ordinated the group which included Cathy Boyle, Peter Ashdown, Ian Dale and Richard Brady.
In the paddock pre-race Johnny Farrelly was quite confident and told jockey Brendan Powell to ride Justice just behind the leaders and to let him go in the home straight.
On the way to the start, it was clear that Justice Super was the most mature and professional of the runners with several of the others needing him to lead them down to the point of departure.
Once off however it was clear that several of the jockeys had the same instructions and the pace was barely faster than a canter. Being more relaxed than the others Justice Super settled well, with others who were harder to settle being forced to the front.
Unfortunately for us however the pace never really quickened and they were barely getting up to speed at they turned for home, as the race quickly developed into a sprint. This did not suit Justice Super at all and the fast flat bred horses quickly distanced themselves.
Justice Super was going well at the line and was full of running and hard to pull up, but sadly the race finished at the line and not a half mile further round the course!
It was hard not to be disappointed with the run, but the race really was not run to suit us and we need to wait for a faster pace and a stiffer track to get a real feel of the level that Justice Super is at.
